Day 130. 235 days and $231 left to go.

I know a lot of you were feeling the warm today!  It was in the 80s here in LA and I heard from friends in a bunch of other parts how it felt like summer.  Sorry Chicago, I don’t think you were a part of this group today, but don’t worry…heat and humidity will be showing their hot and sticky faces soon 🙂

I was thrilled to get the piece below ready for some non-tights or boots wearing action.  Hello sandals, please find your way onto my feet today.

Day 130 - Before

A pastel candy-striper is the look right now.  Slightly like Lisa Turtle in that Saved by the Bell ep where she was a candy striper at the hospital where her mom worked when Zack was admitted to fix his knee?  Remember?  Yeah, a little like that, so I needed to make some amends.

Let’s begin with that left sleeve which had some dirt or something gross on it…

Cutting that dirrrrrty sleeve

Cutting that dirrrrrty sleeve

Not so hot, so I decided to cut both sleeves off.  I gave each sleeve a brand new, dirt-free hem as well.  Wasn’t really into the length either, so it worked out perfectly to go short on the sleeves. Speaking of short, the skirt came next.  I brought it up a good six inches to make it more of a mini.

There was also this lining that made the top of the dress a little pouffier.  It was very 80s, and I’m not just talking about the weather here. I took my scissors and cut it all out.

I still had to get to taking the whole dress in, but I got sucked into the Yankee/Red Sox game.  Honestly, I had no idea what was actually going on at this moment as I was completely entranced by the Dunkin Donut Coolatta signage behind the action.  It was so hot and all I wanted was some cool, deliciousness which I can’t have because DD has boycotted the West Coast for some reason I cannot grasp.  Chick-Fil-A figured it out and set up shop in Manhattan Beach, why can DD do the same?  Anyway, the signage quickly changed to UTZ potato chips (Salt & Vinegar!!) and I got back to focusing on both the game and my dress.

Coffee!!!

Coffee!!!

I took in the sleeves, body and skirt to make it fit me to a T and it was ready for the rays.

Day 130 - After

Short and sweet.  I got to catch up with my gals H & A with Mr. C over iced teas before remembering that today was the day the money I owed to the government from ’09 was going to be withdrawn from my account.  Oh 1099’s.  Single tear.

Kickin' it on the curb!

Kickin' it on the curb...accepting donations.

Let’s hope that this coming year (for all of us) provides a lovely little refund…we’ll rendezvous in Vegas or Hartford, CT, it doesn’t matter, as long as there is a Dunkin Donuts waiting.

Day 78. 287 days and $283 left to go.

Spring fever arrived yesterday and is continuing its reign in Southern California.  I can’t deny these lovely temperatures, so I just have to go with it.  I am watching the Olympics and slightly jealous that I’m not in a blue USA puffy jacket – Ralph Lauren did well with the Opening Ceremony gear this go around!  Anyway, back to how I’m sweating sitting in my car…that means, short and airy paired with flip-flops.  Yes, the Havaianas have returned, even though they haven’t really been put away all that long.

Day 78 - Before

Day 78 - Before

I kind of felt like I was wearing doctor scrubs, but in dress form.  This nightgowny/housedress was shapeless, had a high collar and had just ONE pocket.  I don’t understand these one pocket puppies, as I’ve come across a bunch of them in my scouring journey.  It needed to be brought in a bunch and I wanted to change the neckline as it wasn’t flattering.  That was my first tweak.

I cut a slit down the center of the dress from the neckline as I wanted to create a V neck.  I pinned each side under and got them ready for a new hem to be created.  See the steps below…

One side pinned down!!

Step 1: Pin down each side (post-trim down the center) to turn into a V neck!!

After both sides got pinned, I stitched brand new seams on them…

One side sewed, one to go!

Step 2: One side sewed down, one more to go!

Once the sides of the neckline were stitched and a V was created, I grabbed some scissors and trimmed off about six inches from the bottom.

Make it short!!

Make it short!!

After the bottom was hiked up a smidge and rehemmed, I brought in the sleeves and the rest of the dress to make it fit me a little better.  Now as much as I heart pockets, I had to say goodbye to the one that came on the dress.  It was just too big and honestly, because there was just one pocket to begin with, it wasn’t that difficult making that decision.  It’s just too weird to have a spot for my left hand to hang out in and not for my right.  I didn’t want to play favorites, especially not on Valentine’s Day.

Day 78 - After

Post-stitching, I came out with a rocking dress.  Something cool and breezy enough to enjoy some warm weather, garage sale-ing, Olympic/All Star Game viewing, coffeeing, and even a bbq.

FebBQ!!

FebBQ!!

Yep, the dress was the perfect lazy Sunday ensemble (or actually more like a lazy Saturday one since tomorrow is the bookend to our 3-day weekend)!  Woo hoo that I don’t have to worry about waking up thinking it’s still the weekend like I tend to do on Monday mornings.  I often hit the snooze button on my Blackberry alarm more than I should hoping that an NBA game or repeats of Saved by the Bell will be on instead of the traffic report during the Today Show. I just get to look forward to that next week!

Pucker Up!

Pucker Up!

Mwah and Happy V-day!.  I have officially chosen you lovely friends as my Valentine this year – if I knew where you all lived, I’d send a box of those delicious Conversation Hearts your way to thank you for all your support and hearting of the blog.  Instead, this link will have to do…it’s a little gift from me (and 30 Rock) to you this year!  It never gets old…HAPPY VALENTIME’S DAY!!

XOXO Marisa

Day 30. 335 days and $331 left to go.

Today I wanted to wear a color that was warm and smiley, so I chose this salmon colored puppy. It was slightly overcast and a little chillier out there, so I thought that this sweater would work perfectly to drink my am coffee, watch some bball and footy games as well as try to feel like I was in actual COLD temps instead of just “chilly” ones.

Day 30 - Before

Now with just a simple look, this sweater is slightly blech – color is fun but the rest of it is totally passable.  I did like the ruffled cuffs and collar, however it still wasn’t fun or glam or exciting to me…until I thought of a simple addition.  OK, now you may recall my Day 3 ensemble (quick refresher here) as I had a bevy of these fab floral appliques that I used to make a headband.  I only used two of them and still had a ton leftover.  That ringing bell from the Saved By the Bell theme song went off in my head (as it sometime does…total guilty pleasure) and I thought snag the buckaroo sweater and add those shiny flowers to the front.

Adding that small detail made all the difference – two more floral appliques down, 18 to go.  Like I said last time, this won’t be the last time these floral puppies make an appearance.
