Day 283. 82 days and $83 left to go.

I absolutely loved the color of this dress!!  I was totally brought in by the greenish shade when I first found this puppy!!

Day 283 - Before

Day 283 - Before

What I did first was take the dress in.  It was open too much at the top that I really wanted to make it fitted on me.

Tightening Up!!

Tightening Up!!

I got out my sewing machine and got to work!

Taking in!

Taking in!

Now that it was fitted in my chestal area, I wanted to change up the straps.  I began by undoing the seams that kept the straps in place on my back by my shoulders.

Strap Tweaking!!

Strap Tweaking!!

With these undone, they’re going work perfectly as halter straps!!  I tied the straps together at my neck, added a white sash around my waist and prepped some sweet potato casserole to bring over to cooking club.

Day 283 - After

It was Southern themed tonight…we gathered up at JS’s and brought our dishes.

The Eats!!

The Eats!!

The dress definitely had an apron-y look to it which made it totally work as I served plates of some delish blackberry and peach cobbler.

From the back...

From the back...

Our dinners are clearly about the food, however they always turn out to being more about the catching up.  So nice to do that this eve.  Girl talk really is the best 🙂  I’m already looking forward to next month’s already!

Day 280. 85 days and $86 left to go.

It was a super hot day so I was really looking for something to stay cool in.  Wasn’t sure if I wanted a dress or just a top, but I thought this lavender-y, crepe number would do just the trick.

Day 180 - Before

Day 180 - Before

It was light and airy which I thought was great.  Loved the color, but wasn’t crazy about the fit or the top of the dress.  My mind started racing and I came up with a fun idea that was going to bear a lovely, cool top.

But, parting with these was first on the agenda.

Not happening!

Not happening!

I got rid of both shoulder pads in no time!!

There they go!

There they go!

In getting to the coolest place possible so my sweat-o-meter wasn’t crazily off the charts, I decided to cut off the shoulders on both sides.

There they go!

New shoulder time!

I trimmed off one and then easily tweaked the other.

Shoulderless time!

Shoulderless time!

I had a little halter-esque project going on, just that my back wasn’t going to be exposed.

Shoulder Exposé

I pinned down the raw edges on both sides, cut off the length of the dress…

Shorten up!

…and stitched everything into place.

Sew it down!

Paired with some jeans, a vintage hanging locket and Havaianas on my feet, I enjoyed the warm weather and made an evening trip to the movies.

Day 280 - After

Day 280 - After

Fun night to go check out Going the Distance where I immediately fell in love with Drew Barrymore’s wardrobe – fun and casual (lots of stripes and deep backed T-shirts)…

Love the outfit! Love the pretzels!

…with some scattered sequined/beaded pieces that I salivated over.

Loved what she wore to her London premiere…

 Drew!!

Drew!!

Because I did leave the arm holes larger (when I toyed around with the idea of adjusting, it tightened the top a smidge too much and lost a bit of the drapey/flowy element) I threw on my olive tank underneath which kind of matched DB above…

Fab undergarment!

Fab undergarment!

Let the weekend continue!!

Day 271. 94 days and $95 left to go.

Let’s just say that there’s a whole lotta mess happening at the collar of this puppy.

Day 271 - Before

Day 271 - Before

I’m a total gingham gal but it was a little too much gingham in all the wrong places.

Marianne!!!

Marianne!!!

I decided to veer away from the Marianne from Gilligan’s Island look today and take it off!

Getting rid of the gingham!

Getting rid of the gingham!

I cut the gingham fabric off from around the neckline and in just minutes, the gingham was gone!!

Gingham gone!

Gingham gone!

Now that the neckline was clean and pretty, I went to shortening the dress next.  I cut off about a foot of fabric to hike it up.

Going short!

Going short!

Instead of stitching my hem I did something that any of you will be able to recreate at home.  I pinned and folded the edge of my dress under and ironed it down in place.  I grabbed some mailing tape, took off a few swatches, and used that to hem the bottom of my dress.

Taped Hem!!

Taped Hem!!

Voila!  A simple and easy trick for anyone who may not have a sewing machine or are less inclined to use one.

The last change was my siggy “Pinch & Cinch” trick that I used at the neckline…

Pinch & Cinch!!

Pinch & Cinch!!

I pinched each side of the halter neck, took a safety pin to the gathered fabric, and cinched it in place.

Safety Pins!!

Safety Pins!!

Such a simple trick to really give a little more drama to the neckline.

Day 271 - After

Day 271 - After

Hello new dress!!  I used the belt from Day 139 to wrap around the waist of my brand new halter!!  What a difference a little gingham removal and shortening can do!

From the back!!

From the back!!

This called for a celebration, so I headed to MILK for a little sweet treat to end my day…

Nutella & Coffee Toffee!!

Nutella & Coffee Toffee!!

Nutella ice cream and a coffee toffee ice cream sammie?  I nearly fainted.

Dee-lish!!

Dee-lish!!

You’d think my night was made right there, but no…there was a cherry on top of this ice cream sundae!  They were playing Bananarama’s “I Heard A Rumor” which took me back to 1987 when I used to dress up in my dad’s big button down shirts and have dance parties.  Oh happy day…it’s nice to be back home in LA!

Day 249. 116 days and $116 left to go.

OK, we’re looking like a straight up Pioneer Woman today.  Not like the chic Ree Drummond, but the “I’m ready to go panning looking for gold, ya hear” type of broad.  Not really feeling it, so we’re going to leave the Gold Rush and cruise control our way into the new millenium, aka 2010!!

Day 249 - Before

Day 249 - Before

I  highly dislike a lot of what’s going on here.  Big part of the dislike is the white trim on both the collar and cuffs…so looks like I’m just going to have to get rid of both!

Collar, buh bye!

Collar, almost buh bye!

Got the seam rippers out and took off the collar.

Collar, buh bye!

Collar, buh bye!

I’ll hold onto those if I decide to go the pilgrim route this Halloween like I did when I was four.  (My mom made my pilgrim costume back in nursery school…everyone else got to be princesses and I was a pilgrim.  At the time I was less than thrilled, but looking back, my mom rules for creating one of the best costumes ever.  Will have to scan that at some point to show…)

Now to the white cuffs.  Instead of seam ripping, I just cut the whole thing off!

Sleeves, buh bye!

Sleeves, buh bye!

Next came the pair of shoulder pads – this top will not be needing them any longer, so I snipped them out and added them to my collection!

Pads, buh bye!

Pads, buh bye!

I did use my seam ripper to take off the sashes that were originally found underneath the collar.  I’m holding onto them for just a bit as they’ll be returning really soon!

Sashes, buh bye!

Sashes, buh bye!

I next took my scissors and trimmed the seams at the shoulders to create two separate pieces.

Cut the top at the shoulders! Two pieces!!

Cut the top at the shoulders! Two pieces!!

I folded one side under and then got to the other side…

Folding under time!

…and pinned it into place.  My new dress top is progressing!!

Let's get pinned!

Let's get pinned!

Now, those sashes I put to the side earlier, it’s time to bring them back!  They’re just not going to come back as traditional sashes anymore but straps for my new dress!!

New straps!

New straps!

I pinned my straps into place on the front of the dress (no stitching on the back as we’re going to make this halter-ish!) and then got to stitching down all the rest of my pinned areas on the dress.

And the outcome??

Day 249 - After

Day 249 - After

Brand new, fab, non-collared, non-pioneery dress that is totally working for summer.  I don’t look like I belong next to Yosemite Sam anymore!

When I say Woah!!

Ultimate Pioneer!!

Ooh, and the back?

From the back!

From the back!

I love the little halter-esque action we’ve got going on.  The two sashes are the perfect length for tying into a bow.  Dainty and comfortable.  Two of my fave qualities!
