Day 239. 126 days and $125 left to go.

Not quite sure how many of y’all are Mad Men fans, but for those who are, you know what today is!!!  MAD MEN returns!!  Sigh for some Don Draper.

Oh how I was missing you.  Today’s dress??  You’re gonna be calling me Betty soon enough.  (Don’t worry…no spoilers!!)

Day 239 - Before

Day 239 - Before

This dress was slashed beyond belief!  There was no way anyone was going to be able to wear this puppy with the severe slit action.  I had some work to do.

First thing I did was pin together all the slashed areas.  And yes, there were a lot of slashed areas.

Pinning together the shreds!!

Pinning together the shreds!!

After the pinning, I got to sewing.

Woo skirt!!

Woo skirt!!

The skirt is now one piece!!  Took a bit of time, but it’s all together now.  But, that’s not all.  There’s still some work to be done.  Sheer sleeves?  Not happening.  I got the scissors and snipped away.

Took off those sleeves!!

Took off those sleeves!!

Likey??

Sleeves-be-gone!

Sleeves-be-gone!

The last step was cutting that skirt that I just sewed together.  I wanted a knee lengther, so I trimmed it in half.

Goodbye length!

Goodbye length!

After the trimming, a little re-hemming was done and my dress was ready for the 60s, with the addition of a vintage brooch and some pumps as well.

Day 239 - After

It’s been a while since the last season, so I wanted to offer some early cocktails to set the mood.

Chivas, Mr. Draper?

Chivas, Mr. Draper?

Don took the bait, sipped the Chivas I offered all while blowing him a kiss.

Specially made for you Donnie :)

Day 33. 332 days and $328 left to go.

I had an extremely important dinner on my agenda for this evening that clearly was going to require an excellent ensemble. Nothing less for a night out with the BFF, right?

Day 33 - Before

Day 33 - Before

This dress was an all in all mess when I came across it in a pile of vintage toss aways.  The color was eh, the length was eh, the collar was eh, but the best part was the shimmery thread that made vertical lines throughout the piece.  Shockingly, that was the best (and only) part of the dress that I liked.  Clearly it was time to get crackin!

I decided to cut it shorter and make it more of a tunic. That solved the length issue, but there was still work to be done. I couldn’t really change the color, however I could change the way it fit and that I did!  Because I was keeping the color intact, I grabbed my fave vintage 60s chestnut belt along with my brown Oxford’s to make the brownish color scheme work. Chcck it out…

Day 33 - After

Day 33 - After

After some delish food – burrata, a full-bodied Cab, some ridiculous mushroom gnocchi and some bread pudding, on top of a convo that was one for the history books, me and my LB grabbed s’more cocktails with some friends down the street. Said friend included this pal…

Day 33 - After with my new mannequin BFF

Day 33 - After with my new mannequin BFF

…who wasn’t much of a talker. He left that to me and LB – we talked so much at our belated bday dinner that we were the last people standing, or sitting rather, in the restaurant. I received the BGE (best gift ever) – a DVD full of Swans Crossing episodes, which for most wouldn’t ring any sort of bell, but to us (and the other 14 people across the country who were obsessed) was literally like pennies falling from heaven. It’s the simple things that make this girl smile. Thanks LB – I’m gonna be smiling for a long time!!! xoxo

Day 32. 333 days and $329 left to go.

Now when I found this puppy, it looked like it could have been an figure skating ensemble in a past life. Clearly way longer than any Olympic regulated costume I’ve ever seen and it was without a speck of flare – I mean, what’s a costume without feathers, sequins, brightly colored lighting bolts and flames? I envisioned Dorothy Hamill, a pair of skates, and a bowl hair cut and wanted to get as far away from that picture as possible.

Day 32 - Before

Day 32 - Before

What sold me on this piece wasn’t the unflattering center seam that ran all the way down the front of the dress from the top to the bottom, it was the amazing buttons and ruching on the back of the neck. That in itself was worth the $1 – I knew that I could always turn that into some fun accessory if the rest of the piece didn’t work, but nah…I had faith in myself that something dope would prevail.

Day 32 - Neck & Button Detail

Day 32 - Neck & Button Detail

I pondered a bit over which direction to take this, and in the end I decided to chop it all off! Because the center seam was so unflattering, any sort of dress (mini or knee-length) would have still looked just as heinous. I scratched the dress idea and went solely with the turtleneck.  I loved the final product and added one of my fave ebay vintage gold tassel necklaces to accompany.  I guess you could say that was my couples partner this evening.

Day 32 - After

Day 32 - After

I couldn’t wait to take the newly completely piece out for a double axel or triple lutz (ie. Blue Moon’s during the happiest of hours with SZ). The fans in the stands (ie. the men sitting at the bar watching Wisconsin beat the Hurricanes) gave me 10s (ie. “I like the way that looks”) so I left very happy with my gold medal status (ie. smiles and nods). The Olympics are right around the corner and clearly I’m getting excited.

Day 25. 340 days and $336 left to go.

As Blizzard Watch 2009 continues on the Eastern Seaboard, all I can do is watch The Weather Channel, see all the people having fun sledding in Central Park, and throw on something short-sleeved to revel in the 70 degree climate. So, choice of ensemble today was totally a dress.

Day 25 - Before

Day 25 - Before

To be honest with you, I couldn’t quite tell what article of clothing this originally was.  Slightly nightgowny (but do you need a belt to accompany a nightgown?) and slightly housedressy (I could see someone vacuuming in this if it were 1969) – neither potential involves anybody leaving the house, which is the one thing I can successfully deduce was never done just by looking at it.

Seeing that it was rather large and slightly frumpsters, I knew the work involved on this puppy would be worth it in the end. I took in the sleeves, bust, and hips and shortened it to produce something totally “leave the house-able”.

Day 25 - After

Day 25 - After

And that’s exactly what I did.  I left the house and met up with my girlfriends to enjoy a fun dinner. Truffle oil, Champagne splits, and dark chocolate covered shortbread cookies, oh my. We shared some stories, like ladies do, however I am not at liberty to share at this time.  What I can leave you with is this…and do what you will with it. Wearing a mermaid costume is never a good idea.

Day 22. 343 days and $339 left to go

Now today’s ensemble cost me three bucks…this is the most I’ve paid for one thing so far in this fashion voyage of mine, however the evening that was ahead of me needed something spectacular to be donned.  It was the 10th Annual Christmas Dinner coordinated yet again by the lovely TT.  It’s a little tradition she began with a large group of us who all went to college together. We began the dinner as spry twenty year olds and still act (and drink) the same as we did back then, ten years later.

The piece I crafted started out like this…

Day 22 - Before

Day 22 - Before

I found it at a garage sale and immediately was drawn to the intricate beading and sequins at the waist.  Now, the top layer is a crepe material and it came with a silk slip dress to wear underneath.  The one big, huge problem??  The word SAMPLE was written across the front in a very thick, and permanent, paint marker.

Day 22 - Before (SAMPLE!)

Day 22 - Before (SAMPLE!)

I still felt the need to purchase it, because even for $3, it was completely salvageable.

I tried dying the entire thing black, but that didn’t work,  I tried taking a black Sharpie and scribbling over the letters, á la Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman, but that didn’t work either.  Nothing seemed to click, as that paint pen was one tough sucker, so I said it’s time to get cutting!  I opted to chop off the bottom of the dress and make it into a festive top.

Day 22 - After

Day 22 - After

I totally dug how this puppy looked short, even though I was pretty in love with the idea of keeping it a dress. But alas, I had to make it work, and make it work I did.

I cut the crepe dress as well as the slip dress beneath and gave the slip a little bit of flair by crossing the straps in the back.  This was a relatively easy tweak that I just paired with a backless corset bra (side note – I’ll be honest I had to keep tabs on said bra all night so that no nipple slips took place. Crepe is sheer friends, crepe is sheer. Wasn’t feeling the need to recreate any of that heinous Tara Reid action from back in the day.)

Day 22 - After (From the Back!)

Day 22 - After (From the Back!)

Successful outfit paired with delicious food and cocktails as well as good company = the best night ever.

Party People in the House!

Party People in the House!

It’s nights like these that truly make you appreciate all you have.  I know that I feel like the luckiest girl in the world when I’m around these amazing group of people. Spirit of the holidays, that’s for sure.

Day 19. 346 days and $345 left to go.

Today I wanted to feel like I was on vacation – sandy beaches, pretty sunsets, frozen beverages, the whole nine.  I mean, I was down in San Diego (working) and kind of close to the beach, however I was definitely far from a holiday excursion 🙂  So I thought that a floral motif was necessary to assist in my vacation dreams.

Day 19 - Before

Day 19 - Before

This definitely had a floral motif, wouldn’t you say?  Now a floral motif on a muumuu doesn’t scream vacation, however, a floral motif on a cute, short dress that is slightly snug with a belt made from the leftover material chopped off the bottom says, “beer me garçon”!

I woke up from a glorious slumber in complete vacation mode. I threw on my dress and got to work.

Day 19 - After (10 AM, a full work day on the horizon, legitimately smiling)

Day 19 - After (10 AM, a full work day on the horizon, legitimately smiling)

I mean I didn’t get peeved when the hotel’s wake-up call was never made to my room and I was actually enjoying the sounds from the street (ie. horns and expletive-throwing cabbies) when I usually want to scream.  By the end of the day, I was still wearing sunglasses…

Day 19 - After (Sunglasses at Night, So I Can, So I Can)

Day 19 - After (Sunglasses at Night, So I Can, So I Can)

Thank you for today, vacation dress.  I’m sure I’ll be cursing traffic tomorrow.

Day 18. 347 days and $346 left to go.

I’m slightly obsessed with navy – not a big fan of blue (specifically the way it looks on me and my über fair skin) but navy is a completely different story.  So, as you can imagine, this dress cried for me Argentina.

Day 18 - Before

Day 18 - Before

I loved the pleats on the top and the texture that it created with the flowy skirt, however the sizing and length needed to be fixed. Just a little shortening and tightening was all that was needed to make it work, as it’s the perfect winter (in Southern California) dress.

Out came the scissors and sewing machine to make this into my new favorite dress that I’m only going to get to wear once this year.  With that being said, I had to celebrate, as this dress needed its moment – I decided to head down to San Diego.  Now this had nothing to do with the fact that I have to be working out of the Sé Hotel tomorrow in downtown SD, I just thought party=San Diego.

Day 18 - After (Downtown SD that you can't see in the background)

Day 18 - After (Downtown SD that you can't see in the background)

I threw on a gold belt from the 80s (thank you Mom!) with one of my fave Ebay gold vintage necklaces and the newly crafted dress was ready to rock and roll.  It went to Maloney’s on 6th Street, enjoyed a Newcastle or many, and sang along to 69Boyz “Tootsee Roll” while Van Wilder and SportsCenter played in the background.

Then this came next…

Day 18 - After (...Party)

Day 18 - After (...Party)

Bed jumping (because honestly, it’s just as much fun when you’re 30), Makers Mark, and my dress totally brought down the house.  Because that’s what you do when you’re in San Diego with a kickass ensemble…
