Day 237. 128 days and $127 left to go.

So the green dress today was completely inspired by my evening plans…l was heading back to the Hollywood Bowl for some Planet Earth Live! action.  The LA Philharmonic was playing along with one of my FAVE Discovery Channel shows and I wanted to get as green as possible to celebrate the planet!

Day 237 - Before

Oh, and I did. This large green puppy had a little too much length and these long sleeves are not conducive to summer weather at all.  I got to some changin…

Cinch & Pin!

Cinch & Pin!

I didn’t like the neckline, so I turned the dress inside out and pinched the area at the bottom of the V shape.  I took a safety pin and pinned it in place!

Voila!

Boob Ruching!!

Next thing I did was trim the sleeves short.  Didn’t want to sweat buckets, so I cut them in half.

Halfsies!!

After the sleeves went short, so did the length.  I cut off about a foot and a half of fabric as I wanted to keep it right around the knees.

Soon-to-be Short!

After my adjustments, I suited up the machine with a lovely pale green shade of thread, stitched down the sleeves, and gave it a new hem.

Edge Sewing!!

My dress was complete and I was channeling my inner Norma Desmond.

I'm ready for my close up Mr. DeMille.

Well, here’s the true close up…

I even took some extra fabric, tied it into a little bow and pinned it to the cinched area on my chest!  We watched clips of Planet Earth (that snow leopard episode was amazing!) and in true Bowl tradition, we had some cocktailing to accompany.

Before I knew it, the next part of my eve gave me a little shower. A champagne shower, to be exact.  As I went to open a bottle of champagne that I schlepped for a mile to create mimosas with some freshly squeezed OJ (yay for orange trees in Los Angeles backyards!), there was an explosion!!  Didn’t realize how powerful my hike up the hill was! Before I knew it, the most amazing pop was heard, the cork was airborne, and the bottle was foaming everywhere.  My sweatshirt, meant to keep me warm, was not working any longer.

Champagne Explosion!!

Despite being soaked,  there was still a bit of champagne in the bottle that didn’t spray out.  (PS, apologies to the person who may have gotten corked when it flew into the air.)

We put it to good use – polished it off and opened a new bottle.

There's about half the bottle left...

I had a second shot of redemption, but that soon got kicked to the curb.  Explosion number two arrived and even though it didn’t pack as big or a punch or pop as loud, I was still soaked with alcohol.  Love that my hair was even dripping!  Don’t worry, we drank everything down to the last sip.

TGIF!  Happy weekend friends :)

Day 37. 328 days and $324 left to go.

Happy Sunday!!  There was a birthday lunch on the agenda for today which meant I couldn’t spend the last day of the holiday break in sweats.  As tempting as it was, I had to come up with something a bit more apropos for frittatas, champagne and a cake with a chocolate chip custard filling that was sent down from heaven (or, the valley, to be specific).  This is what I chose.

Day 37 - Before

Now you may say, “Marisa, why would you be wearing a dress with such a springy print and with sleeves as short as those.  You do know it’s January, don’t you?” This is a completely understandable comment and you’re completely right. However as I reside in Los Angeles and the weather tends to be a little warmer than anywhere else in the country, I felt the need to dress like it was May – I mean, it was 78 degrees when I left my house, so yes, I wore my floral dress and, wait for it, my nude open toed heels. Gasp.

Day 37 - After

It was a tad too long and hit my legs straight on in the calf area – this is not a flattering length on me and I wasn’t looking to give myself a set of cankles so I took out my scissors and went to town.  The sleeves needed to be taken in as well as the bodice, so I stitched both areas to tighten them up.

The completed outfit was exactly the right ensemble to celebrate my dear EH’s birthday as well as give me a slight bit of spring fever.

Day 25. 340 days and $336 left to go.

As Blizzard Watch 2009 continues on the Eastern Seaboard, all I can do is watch The Weather Channel, see all the people having fun sledding in Central Park, and throw on something short-sleeved to revel in the 70 degree climate. So, choice of ensemble today was totally a dress.

Day 25 - Before

Day 25 - Before

To be honest with you, I couldn’t quite tell what article of clothing this originally was.  Slightly nightgowny (but do you need a belt to accompany a nightgown?) and slightly housedressy (I could see someone vacuuming in this if it were 1969) – neither potential involves anybody leaving the house, which is the one thing I can successfully deduce was never done just by looking at it.

Seeing that it was rather large and slightly frumpsters, I knew the work involved on this puppy would be worth it in the end. I took in the sleeves, bust, and hips and shortened it to produce something totally “leave the house-able”.

Day 25 - After

And that’s exactly what I did.  I left the house and met up with my girlfriends to enjoy a fun dinner. Truffle oil, Champagne splits, and dark chocolate covered shortbread cookies, oh my. We shared some stories, like ladies do, however I am not at liberty to share at this time.  What I can leave you with is this…and do what you will with it. Wearing a mermaid costume is never a good idea.
