Day 149. 216 days and $213 left to go.

I mean, if you ask me, nothing says Monday more than Aztec prints on a beltless dress 🙂

Day 149 - Before

Day 149 - Before

Actually, more along the lines of an 80s version of an Aztec pattern but Rihanna is feeling the vibe too…

Again I find myself with some shoulder pads that have morphed into a quasi-Nerf-type-instrument of sport.  I may substitute this at the next croquet match, wiffle ball game or hacky-sack competish…(this is open for discussion, so if you’ve got a radder game idea, do share.)

Slightly deformed shoulder pads...

After snipping out the pads, I had to tackle the belt loops next.

Belt loops...soon to be removed!

Belt loops...soon to be removed!

There were two rather large ones solely in the front of the dress, so I cut them both out.  I can’t even begin to imagine what kind of belt originally went through those.  It was the 80s, so perhaps the previous owner used an actual python to cinch up her frame.  I’m sure she was wearing snake skin somewhere on her – if not the belt – that’s for sure!

I wasn’t pleased with the neckline and with the shoulder pads now out, there was a little more space happening up there.

Fixin' that collar

I ended up cutting a straight line from the top of the dress down a couple of inches, pulled back the edges, and created a newer, roundish, V-ish neck.

Ooh, and of course, the shortening of the length was the last change.  Brought it up above my knees and now we’re talking.  New neck, padless shoulders, belt loops gone and tiny navy sash added for flair – hello Monday ensemble.  Lovely to see you!

Ooh, and you probably couldn’t tell, but take a look at these puppies!!

I mean, seriously.  Those pockets…sigh.

* Two lovely gals –  Miss S at Those Tricks and M Girl at Out of Order did a little Q & A action with yours truly.  Such an honor to chat with these awesomely creative girls.  They’re already on my Google Reader, and I have a feeling that you may be adding to yours as well.  Makes me want to take some voyages up to Santa Cruz and Dallas for crafty visits!  xx

Day 141. 224 days and $221 left to go.

I hope everyone has been enjoying their weekends!  Lots of Stanley Cup and NBA finals-ing, post-Tax Day-ing, Coachella-ing, midst of Opening Week of baseball-ing, good weather-ing…  Lots of options, no matter where you are!  Today I had a fun project.  Bold print and comfortable cotton material…one small prob.  One BIG tear.

Day 141 - Before

Day 141 - Before

Now, here’s the thing…TOTES SALVAGABLE!!  Just because there is a big, gaping tear down the dress, doesn’t mean we need to toss it.  I grabbed it at the everything’s a dollar sale, so I did end up spending that dollar even though I would have most definitely talked it down if it were at a garage sale or flea market.  However I saw the potential and was ready to get to it.

Pin that slit!!

Pin that slit!!

I pinned together the very L-O-N-G area that was open to prep some mending.  After pinning, I stitched a very long brand new hem to close the gaping hole.

Pinned and stitched!

Pinned and stitched!

Aside from the huge tear, it was still a bit too long for my tastes, so I brought it up to my knees.  I cut off a little bit of material, and used a little strip as a makeshift belt to cinch the dress together a bit.

There I am.  Standing in front of one of the few Southern California locations of my favorite quick eats joint.  CHICK-FIL-A.

Day 141 - After...From Afar :)

Day 141 - After...From Afar 🙂

The only issue?  I literally had my Wally World moment.  That’s right.  We went. We parked. We were denied.  As soon as we walked up, it came to us.  Chick-Fil-A is closed on Sunday.  Hmm, where’s Chevy Chase, Bev D’Angelo and the rest of the Griswold clan?

Whaaaa??????

Whaaaa??????

I couldn’t get my chicken sandwich with pickles, peach milkshake, and waffle fries.  I know, I know.  I had been saving up all weekend for a little splurging today and i was totally denied.  However, it’s hard to be totally bummed when you have to travel to the beach for some grub…

Hi Beach.

Hi Beach.

So, ultimately it wasn’t so bad.  No chicken sandwich, but there was most definitely sand as well as some lovely ocean views and fresh breezes.  Sigh…

Day 140. 225 days and $222 left to go.

On the agenda for today was a trip to Dodger Stadium to partake in a little Opening Week action against the Giants.  The Dodgers didn’t fare so well, but we’ll get to that later.

I have loads of Yankee gear, but only own a Dodgers hat, so it was time to put together an ensemble that included a little bit of blue and white to root for the local team.  And to root on Mr. Matt Kemp, aka Rihanna’s man, aka my West Coast version of Derek Jeter.

Matt Kemp!

Hi Matt Kemp 🙂

I found this fab little number that was full o’ Dodgers colors including an extra hint of green, so I figured this would totally work.

Day 140 - Before

Hi dress with blue and white speckles and green, what look like, hibiscuses.  Or is it hibiscui or just hibiscus?  Either or, dress was needing a bit of help and I was ready to assist.

Now I was ready to head to a sporting event, so keeping the piece as a dress was not happening – I decided to do a little snippy action.

Getting rid of that length!

Getting rid of that length!

I cut off the length and had a brand, new top totes suitable for some baseballing!  I was going to trim the sleeves, but as a fair-skinned gal, I tend to look for as much coverage as possible especially when I’m going to be out in the sun, for a while, in the middle of the day.

Here’s the completed piece…

Day 140 - After

Take me out to the ballgame!!  My top was the perfect accompaniment to my LA hat, jeans and chartreuse flip-flops.  We enjoyed the clearest of days to watch a blowout game…

Dodger Stadium!!

Chocolate!!!

Chocolate!!!

And, before the game started, I had my first sighting outside the stadium!  Woo hoo!!  The lovely Heidi recognized me and came up to say hello.  I was completely surprised and totally thrilled!   So fantastic to get to meet followers in person 🙂

So, the Dodgers lost miserably (0-9) but the day was a blast.  New friends, yummy snacks, sunny day…the best way to spend a Saturday!

Day 138. 227 days and $224 left to go.

Now that April 15th has arrived, taxes have been paid or an extension filed, refunds have been received (hopefully for most of you, who unlike me did not have the pleasure of owing this year) and it’s time to take a deep breath and start collecting receipts for all the 2010 write-offs for next year 🙂 Yeah, I’ve already begun adding them to my old pink Betsey Johnson shoebox…

The drab, dark and dreary tax cloud has disappeared, and found itself hovering over Europe…

I wonder if Mt. Eyjafjallajokull was just waiting until today to erupt?  In any event, I thought that wearing a sunny piece would be just the right thing for the day.

Day 138 - Before

Day 138 - Before

I found this piece sifting through gobs and gobs of old pieces at a garage sale and it’s in rather excellent condition being that it’s a crepe-y material.  I was shocked there were no holes or tears.  I loved the colors (and the black sequined trim) as well, but as a dress, I thought there was a little too much going on.  Also, if I were to just keep it as a dress, I would need a serious belt to not only cinch it, but to break up the bold colors.

I decided to head down the tunic route and cut off the bottom off.

From Dress to...

From Dress to...

I was left with a billowy top which I was originally thinking about tightening up, however I loved the way that it was working.  And that’s all folks – I didn’t do a lick of anything else to it to make it look like this.

Day 138 - After

Day 138 - After

With my black ribbed LAMade tank underneath, black flat vintage boots and a pair of old BDG jeans from Urban Outfitters, my outfit was perfection.  Let’s go back to the easy factor too – just a few minutes to go from overwhelmingly citrusy to light and fruity.  I mean, I was described verbatim as “that fruit lady” which then after a game of “type in fruit lady to see what google says,” it was figured out to be Carmen Miranda. I said Chiquita Banana, but got shot down.  Will channel her for next time.

All I’m missing is the headpiece…

Happy Camper!

…may have to start crafting one now for when I find Carmen Miranda/Chiquita Banana ensemble Part II.  I feel confident that I’ll come across something equally as bright.  Maybe something with an actual fruit print on it too?  I’m on the hunt friends!

Day 136. 229 days and $226 left to go.

Happy Tuesday!!  Not only am I excited for LOST this evening (I know all you Losties feel me…how ’bout that Desmond?) as well as the return of Glee (lots having to do with Idina Menzel, Patrick Harris comma Neil, Kristin Chenoweth, & the songs of Madonna making appearances), but it’s a cooking club night with the girlinas. Asian fare is on the menu, so I kind of thought this piece could work.

There is red piping along the cap sleeves as well as along the mild V-neck collar which reminded me of a trip I took down to Chinatown months back scoping out some gorge silk dresses.  (PS, my home page blog pic is from said Chinatown trip, thanks to JW, my personal Annie Lebovitz just without all the getting suing action).  So I figured this would be the perfect outfit for this evening.

Day 136 - Before

Day 136 - Before

This dress was a little off – weird length, definitely see through (hence the jeans under this puppy) and the arms were a bit too big for me.  Just for the sheer (PUN!) fact that I don’t think I own undergarments that wouldn’t be seen beneath this, I opted to craft this into a top.  Flashing on the radar today?  Negative, friends.

I cut off the bottom portion of the dress (about a foot) and sewed a brand new hem around the bottom of my new top.  I used maroon thread, so check out the close up below…

New Hem!

…after I hemmed the bottom of my top, I took in the dress on each side a few inches to make it a little more fitted.

I loved that it still fell rather loosely as we had a meal of champions on the horizon.

Dumplings, chow mein, orange chicken, oh my!

I mean a spread of homemade dumplings, almond cookies, noodles, chx, some wasabi mashed potatoes and pickled cucumbers was spot on while we caught up and chatted about being featured on magazine covers (check out May’s House Beautiful with MW’s ridiculously amazing design skills on the cover!!) and a certain “Posh encounter with a type of spice.”

Almond cookie in one hand, sake in the other?  Yeah, just a Tuesday night in my books 🙂
